Our First Custom Project

Airstream of Chicago Special Vehicle Operations began in 2007 in efforts to support the Africa Infectious Disease (AID) Village Clinics. The program was founded in 2001 as an initiative of the Anne and Robert Lurie Foundation.

We had the honor of creating a custom-built RV outfitted to serve as a mobile medical unit. Since its inception, the program has provided health care services and education to more than 90,000 people in rural Kenya, outside the capital city of Nairobi.

Our mission is to work side-by-side with our clients to understand their needs and optimize the unit’s design to reach its highest potential. As a certified Airstream Customer Builder and an authorized Winnebago reseller, you will have peace of mind knowing your custom unit is nothing but top quality.

Lurie’s Children’s Hospital Waiting Room

In June 2012, the Lurie Children’s Hospital was completed and instantly considered one of top children’s hospitals in the world, staffed and run by Northwestern Medical School. The new location prides itself on creating a unique healing environment for children and their families unlike any other. Throughout the hospital are theme areas for play such as a mock fire house and truck, helicopters, treehouses and even a large green space atrium overlooking Lake Michigan.

On the sixth floor, our custom team created an Airstream lounge as an ode to Ann Lurie and her efforts with the AID Village Clinics. Lurie and her team provide medical services and health education to remote villages in Kenya inside a custom Airstream, that serves a mobile medical unit.
